 JOHOR BARU: The price of fish paste products will increase by 30% to 50% from April 1 due to rising surimi (minced white fish) prices. 

Malaysian Seafood Industries Association treasurer Lee Teck Wee said surimi prices had doubled since last November. Local surimi as well as that imported from Thailand now cost between RM13 and RM18 per kg. 

“Fish paste product manufacturers increased surimi product prices by 5% last year but are still unable to cope with the rising production cost.

“We have no choice and are forced to make the price adjustment again,” he said. 

Lee said the price of fish paste products including fishball would increase between RM1 and RM3 per kg from April 1. 

He said that several major factors, including the rise in crude oil price and reduction in fish catches, had caused surimi prices to soar.
