Con artists get beating from members of public
KOTA BARU, Thu.:
Two men were injured when they were beaten up by members of the public for pulling a scam on an elderly couple outside a bank in Jalan Mahmood here at 9.40am today.

Kota Baru police chief ACP Zahruddin Abdullah said the two men, and a woman from Sarawak, aged between 20 and 50 years, had tried to cheat the senior citizens, both former teachers in their 70s, over a land deal.

The suspects, he said, had asked the couple to empty their bank account to make it easier for them to bank in money for three years rental of a parcel of land belonging to the elderly duo.

"The senior citizens appeared to have been put under a spell and withdrew RM25,500 but became suspicious when told to hand over the money to the suspects, who promised them that they would bank in the money together with the rental into their account at a later date.

"When the suspects suddenly grabbed the money from them and tried to escape in a Toyota Prado four-wheel drive vehicle, the elderly couple screamed for help which alerted passers-by," he said when contacted by Bernama.
Zahruddin said members of the public blocked the suspects' vehicle and when the men tried to run away, bashed them up causing the duo to be injured in the head and body.

The three were then surrendered to the police who arranged for the injured suspects to be sent to the Raja Perempuan Zainab II for treatment, he added. - Bernama
