Dear Mr Editor,

Sugar!Sugar!Sugar! Malaysia consumers have been facing this shortage of sugar problem since April 2006. The Ministry has continuously threatened the industry players that action would be taken under the so called Control of Supplies Act 1961and Price Control Act 1946 for hoarding or refusing to sell but this threat has simply been shrugged off by the traders.

The NCCC has continued to receive complaints from the public on the unavailability of sugar and until now we have just heard of justifications thrown in by the Ministry on the cause of the shortage but no concrete long term solution has been offered.

Most traders now sell sugar way beyond the controlled price and the most interesting fact is that it is being done openly.  Where are the authorities? Are the authorities waiting for the consumers to simply accept it as fate and continue paying the demanded price by the traders? What is the long term solution to this problem, taking into consideration the many other items which are controlled?

We believe that it is time that the government seriously looks into the setting up of the Price Commission so that prices of essential goods could be reviewed according to market conditions. Input from all relevant stakeholders would definetely help in evaluating the current market condition. We must understand that Malaysia is amongst the very few countries in the world which practices this price control mechanism and we must not leave prices without a review for years. No body would want to get into a bussiness that looses money.
